Chimney Camera Inspections

Chimney Inspections

According to the National Fire Protection Association Standard 211, "Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary." This is the NFPA safety standard and takes into account the fact that even if a chimney is not used much, animals may nest in the flue or there may be other types of detrioration to the chimney making it unsafe.

Level 1 Chimney Inspection

If your chimney or venting system has not changed and you plan to use your system as you have in the past, then a Level 1 inspection is a minimum requirement. A Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service, under the same conditions, and with the continued use of the same appliance.

Level 2 Chimney Inspection

If changes have been made to your chimney or flue, then a Level 2 chimney inspection is required. Additionally, a Level 2 chimney inspection is required upon a sale or transfer of a property or after and operation malfunction or external event that likely caused damage to the chimney.

When a Level 1 or Level 2 chimney inspection suggests any hidden hazard and the evaluation cannot be performed without special tools to access concealed areas of the chimney, then a Level 3 chimney inspection is highly recommended.

Level 3 Chimney Inspection

A Level 3 chimney inspection will address the proper construction and condition of concealed areas of the chimney structure and flue. This inspection will include removal or destruction of portions of the chimney structure required for this level of inspection.

When serious hazards are suspected, a Level 3 inspection may well be required to determine the condition of the chimney system.
